Augma II Arc I is a free action video game wherein you’re trying to bring color back to your sight. Developed by Kamigigana, this indie visual novel features a gripping mystery sci-fi story that has heavy action and psychological horror elements, as well as an iconic cast of characters. Despite the title, this is the first installment of the Augma series and is considered a beta version until Arc II is released.

The world moves forward

In Augma II Arc I, you play as Shira Yamano, a boy who had been involved in an apocalyptic event four years prior to the start of the story. He eventually arrives at Kirron, a mysterious ashen city, and carves a place for himself at an academy with some new friends. He’s still trying to heal from the trauma four years ago but has suddenly ended up getting entangled with the mysteries plaguing the city.

The gameplay here is common with VNs. You’ll mainly be reading the text as visuals are displayed to accompany the story. Unlike most, however, this one is chock-full of narration that’s displayed on the entire screen and not just on a text box at the bottom half. Clocking at 110k words alone, this game is quite heavy and flowery with its writing—taking inspiration from games like Baldr Sky and Dies Irae

The graphics are highly stylized, as well, with its edgy-looking character designs and background splash art. There are over 70 unique CGs you can easily obtain, thanks to its linear storyline. The soundtrack and audio really mesh well with the scenes, too. However, there’s not much replayability to be found here due to the lack of dialogue or action choices like in most visual novels. There’s also only one ending you can get.

Find the answers

All in all, Augma II Arc I is quite the long read for any fans of dark mystery sci-fi VNs. It has an interesting style with its blend of art and music alongside the narration. The writing is quite refreshing for a supernatural mystery story, as well. However, there’s no reason to replay it unless you’re deeply invested in the plot due to its length and strictly linear storytelling.
